My First Century Ride

AdoboVelo had a fundraising event for the SIPA, Search to Involve Pilipino American, this ride will start at Angel’s Stadium, Anaheim to Fiesta Island, San Diego.

We were broken up to 6 groups, each group have 10-12 riders with caption to pull and co-captain to sweep. This is a no-drop zone. This is why this group is amazing, no matter how slow you are or noticed that you are struggling, there are riders that will encourage and help you go through. Also, we have a sweeper and support vehicle. The sweeper car just make sure that no one is left behind, while the support vehicle helps troubled bike.

From Angel’s stadium, we hit the SART to PCH. On PCH, we did a quick bathroom break right after the bridge, then we went to Crystal Cove for our first SAG stop after 20 miles of riding. After Crystal Cove, we then continued on to different cities till San Clemente for our 2nd SAG stop. From San Clemente, we readied our ID for Camp Pendleton’s entry. After different city, we had our lunch stop at Carlsbad. We try to limit our lunch break quick so we don’t have to warm-up once again, we want our legs to keep moving. After the lunch break, we headed towards Torrey Pines State beach where we stopped for bathroom break. Before climbing the hill, we took pictures with everyone and off we go. After the climb, we had a quick SAG stop and we were only 12 miles away from Fiesta Island so we didn’t bother taking long. We headed towards Fiesta Island.

I got dropped by Camp Pendleton because I felt some tightening on my left calf, I just stretched it out and kept going. Another factor is the head wind. Luckily, I was able to catch up with those guys and soon got left behind because of stop lights. I didn’t know that I can still keep up with those guys after 80, hitting 22-26mph even on uphill. I had this energy when I knew that there is only couple miles left, I had this sudden burst of energy to keep going. By arriving at Fiesta Island, I was short 3 miles for a century so I kept going till I hit 100 miles.

Overall, this ride was fun and enjoying. Scenic ride along the coast with perfect weather, not too hot nor too cold. Great century ride experience. Will I do it again? Yes.

To my surprise, I can still ‘hammer’ even after 50 miles, with uphill and downhill. With some strong group, they helped me climb some hill by pushing me but then this is just to keep everyone go fast. They gave me few tips on climbing: relax, keep pedaling, relax, and relax.

SAG stop means refueling, eating, hydrating, etc. Hydrating is very important, even though it was not hot during the ride it is still important to drink fluids.

Below is my Strava details about the ride. We were hitting 18mph all the way till we get to Torrey Pines climb, which dropped my average down to 16mph. I’m not a strong climber, I take my time to climb.

Hollywood Sign Ride

It’s been a while since I posted. I’ve been busy with school and work and I haven’t been able to ride that much. 15 AdoboVelo rode Thursday night to Hollywood Sign.

This ride is easy, fun, and torture. I’m not a climber and I just started climbing; Maybe that’s why I’m having a hard time climbing. But anyways, the last yards when you see the fence is a steep climb.

We started from Eaglerock mall and from there we started going through the streets, we have to do a double paceline to occupy the whole lane. All of us have lights, front and back.

Before going to the Hollywood Sign, there would be a gate. Before that gate, a climb for probably 2 or 3 miles. For me, I have to do a zigzag. It takes more energy and slow but it doesn’t matter, we weren’t in a hurry to climb.

We spent about 30 minutes taking picture, getting some rest, and getting to know other members. It was a fun ride. Definitely looking for another Thursday night ride with AdoboVelo.

One of AdoboVelo who lives in Los Angeles knows the street that most of us, so he took us to a ‘shortcut’. Which includes a short steep climb, a little bit steep than the Hollywood Sign climb. It was fun and torture at the same time and the team encouraging you to keep on going. I had to stop to rest then keep on going.

New Month, New Gear

It’s September 2013 and I’ve been only biking for three months and I’ve invested a lot now with my bike. I’m starting the month of September with new stuff for my bike and this includes: a GPS (Garmin Edge 800), and a road pedal (Shimano PD-5700).

The current pedal that I use for my bike is Shimano XT PD-M780 MTB Pedals, it is a mountain bike pedal and I have yet to install it. Also, I am currently using a wired Sigma 1009, and for me, this is a big update from just a speedometer.

I’m almost finish buying all I need for cycling, I still need to get a cadence sensor and heart rate monitor. As of right now, heart rate monitor is not on my top list.

Right now, I am still saving up to buy a roof mount for my car. This should be on my top list because I keep putting my car on my trunk and I’m having to put the back seat down just to make my bike fit.

I’m happy with my purchase in this month, I believe this is a great investment. Hopefully, this stuffs will last me long.

Ride Improvements

When I first started biking, I couldn’t keep up with my friends who were doing 18mph. I get tired easily, I ran out of gas by the time we hit 10 miles. After a month of riding, I’ve definitely seen so much improvements with myself.

In today’s ride with AdoboVelo, we started from Liberty Park in Cerritos going to Encanto Park in Duarte. Even with a strong riders with us, I was able to keep up with them. We were going 18mph to 20mph all the way to Encanto Park. Of course, when we are going back to Liberty Park there is a headwind which causes trouble for me. Even with a headwind, I was still able to do 18mph.

Before when I went by myself to Encanto Park, I was just averaging 12-15mph. Look at the difference it made in just a month.

So, how did I do this? I just kept riding my bike and going with a faster and stronger rider too. They say, practice makes perfect but in this case riding will make your endurance stronger.

Also, this ride is a training for our coming century ride. Unfortunately, I only did 50 miles. I’m riding short and will go farther and farther each week. With only 4 weeks left, I’m pretty sure I will be ready for that 101 miles.

You can see how I performed in this ride, this is continuous and did not pause whenever we stop causing some of my average to go down.

Build Bike Riding Endurance

Keep riding, as you ride your endurance level will go high.

Week 1: 20 miles, 15 miles, 25 miles
Week 2: 25 miles, 20 miles, 30 miles
Week 3: 30 miles, 25 miles, 35 miles
Week 4: 35 miles, 30 miles, 40 miles
Week 5: 40 miles, 35 miles, 45 miles
Week 6: 45 miles, 40 miles, 50 miles
Week 7: 50 miles, 45 miles, 55 miles
Week 8: 55 miles, 50 miles, 60 miles

Go farther every week and soon you will be doing 100 miles in no time. Besides just riding your bike, your body needs rest. Make sure that you have a rest day.

Food is very important to your body especially if you are going long distance.
Maintain fuel levels:
– Be sure to eat and drink small amounts regularly, drink every 10-15 minutes and eat every 20-30 minutes. Do not eat large meals while biking, blood will go to your stomach and it will weaken your legs and might cause indigestion.
– Drink fluids such as water, Gatorade, sports drink
– Eat bananas, apples, sandwich. It will keep your legs going.
– Too much water can increase hyponatremia. Low salt level in the blood. You need electrolytes to replenish lost sweats.

Don’t ride alone. Ride in a group. This will help you keep going long distances.
